Research report

(2017-2022)

Researching lines

The approval of the LOSU, the active research policies promoted by the European Higher Education System, and the creation of new lists of fields of knowledge have brought about changes in the research parameters of university groups. No less important are the changes in the Spanish and global film and television ecosystem. Today, factors such as internationalization, transdisciplinarity, and the importance of gender create a framework that promotes the use of open science, the transfer of results to society, and citizen science. Furthermore, efforts are being made to strengthen collaboration with public, private, and social economy entities and companies.

TECMERIN wishes to be an active agent of these changes and has therefore established the group’s lines of research around a series of thematic areas in response to this new reality.

Film and television studies: theory, history, and memory

The line of research focused on television and film studies centers on analyzing new perspectives and methodologies in audiovisual history and notions of visual cultures: creation, processes, and audiences.

Postcolonial studies and geopolitics of audiovisual media

This approach to film and television studies is proposed within a political and social context in which the circulation of images is constantly changing and renewing itself in a highly globalized world.

Audiovisual media, society, and gender studies

This line of research focuses on the ways in which audiovisual media represent society as a whole and the diversity of social groups, with particular attention to gender identity representations and women’s studies.

Cultural Heritage

The crisis caused by the disappearance of analog film production, distribution, and exhibition has forced a complete rethinking of the work of film archives and the ways in which audiovisual heritage is preserved in general over the last two decades. All digitization processes are part of this new reality. This line of research investigates and promotes actions to preserve and fix film and other media from the past in the immediate audiovisual future. Among these, we highlight audiovisual technology, simulation, and mixed realities applicable to audiovisual heritage. Preserving and disseminating cultural heritage leads us to investigate systems and methods of capturing data from original assets, while also prompting reflection on ways to make the results available to professionals and the general public.

Image technologies and innovation. Media archaeology

The aim is to study the application of technologies as new tools for audiovisual production, AI systems, and accessibility for people with disabilities. Special emphasis is placed on educational innovation, with the use of video essays for contemporary training, an activity supported by the pioneering work in Spain of the TECMERIN Journal of Audiovisual Essays. In a second block, this axis is articulated around content generated in the web environment, transmedia narratives, video games, and archaeological practices in audiovisual media.
