This work delves into the history of the avant-garde, especially surrealism, and traces its mark on later cinema. The taste for transgression, the search for irrational images and situations and the refusal of pre-established canons characteristic of Luis Buñuel, Hans Richter or René Clair found an echo in the works of filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick or Gaspar Noé, whose films A Clockwork Orange (1971), Irreversible (2002) or Love (2015) update the tenets of historical surrealism to demonstrate that it is still possible to make provocative films that reveal our most visceral realities.
