This audiovisual essay explores the main concepts surrounding the use of voice in film. The ‘acousmatic’ is explained by employing canonical examples from classical cinema, which are used to show the centrality of the voice in film perception. Based on Michel Chion’s research and the theories of Jacques Lacan, as well as sequences from The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939), The Great Dictator (Charles Chaplin, 1940) or a speech by Donald Trump, the video essay shows how the human voice is able to structure our perceptions of a film in a decisive way.
